You can use switch port discovery to detect SNMP enabled devices on the network by specifying the switch port they are connected to. In order for this feature to work, you must select the Switch port support check box on the Configure Discovery Server dialog box when you add the nControl device to your design, and you must also select the Switch Port Discovery check box on the Advanced Properties of the Agent Discovery device.
You can identify the SNMP devices simply by the switch port number. The IP address of the switch is not required, as the switch itself can be discovered on the network. However, you can specify further identification criteria, such as the IP address, if desired. The number of criteria is specified when you create the Agent Discovery device.
When you deploy or emulate the project and connect to it, on the Agent Discovery device you will be able to specify the port number for the SNMP device and the other criteria. The port number refers to the port number listed in the SNMP Interfaces table on the switch.
Note: Typically, the required port number will be the same as the physical port number used on the switch. However, in the case of Cisco switches, a different port number may be required. This is because of the numbering scheme used in the SNMP interfaces table. If you are using a Cisco switch, we recommend that you check the entries in the table before using switch port discovery.
