Echo span and latency

The task of the adaption filter is to determine how to turn the signal from the near end (labeled B in the diagram in the Introduction) into the reference signal from the far end (labeled A).

In the MediaMatrix system, the adaption filter has a buffer size of 140ms, which is referred to as the echo span. If sound is passed into the adaption filter containing an echo longer than the echo span, only the first 140ms of the echo will be cancelled; the remainder will not.

The time taken for sound entering the echo cancellation system to be processed and then finally exit is referred to as the latency. It is 11ms for the MediaMatrix system.
